A Tale of Two Girls: The Slut and the Hero
On Monday I saw two news
stories that played back-to-back. The
contrast between the two principals is so striking I can not get it out of my
head. Let us start with the less consequential
of these two young women. [I would use
the term, “young ladies” but, while one of them certainly is, the other is a
common tramp. I will not even use her
name because she would enjoy the 15 minutes of undeserved fame way too
much.] In Florida an 18 year old smart
ass, arrested in possession of xanax, decided the judge who set her bond at
$10,000 was harshing her mellow. In a
fit of temper (which probably works on both her weak parents and easily
manipulated friends) she threw both a gesture and an insult in the judge’s
direction. Judge Jorge Rodriquez-Chomat
responded by giving her 30 days in jail.
The brat was shocked.
This story was followed by the first, post surgery, news
conference, of Malala Yousufzai. I wrote
about her some months ago.
Malala is a slip of a girl, just 14 years old. She dresses modestly, covers her hair loosely
in a long scarf that wraps around her shoulders. She speaks quietly but in a clear and direct voice. She knows the Koran and readily points out
that there is nothing which forbids girls from going to school.
On
Tuesday, October 9, the pusillanimous pigs who are the Taliban sent a team of
three assassins to murder this young girl.
They had warned her family three times that her, “Western thinking”
would be punished. If you want evidence
that the truth is a very dangerous thing, just witness how the Taliban treated
Malala. What was this girl’s grievous
crime? She was promoting Western
thinking (that means actually, “thinking”); she wants all children, including
all girls to have an education; she was telling the truth about the bullying
going on in the community; she had intelligent people in the Western media
listening to her. For all of these
reasons she had to die. The Taliban
failed. Though badly wounded, she lived. She was flown to London , England
for treatment and on February 4, she held her first press conference. Speaking clearly, though with the left side
of her face immobile, her words spoke of a heart filled with determined
courage. "I want to serve,” she
said, “I want to serve the people. I want every girl, every child, to be
educated.”
So here we have a tale of two girls, and it
speaks volumes about not just who, but what, they are. Malala Yousufzai, a girl who grew up poor in
a poor country and attacked by monsters wanting to kill her, wants to serve and
be educated. The little slut in Florida wants to use
drugs, party and be given a carefree life which she does not deserve and has
not earned. I know her type. They have been given too much and have been
required to do far too little. How did
we produce such a little fool and so many like her? The slut lives in the richest country on
earth, but she values nothing, does nothing and wants only that which
represents immediate gratification and personal indulgence. Malala has been given nothing and lives in
constant danger, but she is the woman I want my daughters to be like.
“Slutty” will be fat, old, wrinkled and indigent
while still in her thirties; Malala will always be a beautiful lady clothed
with the respect and affection of multitudes.
Act with class and keep the faith.
